Just a fluke, right? :-(
http://news.yahoo.com/50-states-see-record-highs-july-173203227.html
Uh huh - just a climate change fluke.
Dunno. Let's ask SPG - On July 19, 2011 a small town in Minnesota was the hottest spot on the planet, with a heat index of 134degrees. :-)(
Hi Hoodie !
Yes, that was in Moorhead, MN (a hop, skip and a jump from Fargo, ND). We just drove right through there last week and I guess Minnesota people are hardy because everyone looked fine ;-)
On July 19th, the heat index in my town was 115 and we tried to get some respite by taking our dogs to Lake City (birthplace of the water ski - lol) and we had a picnic while the dogs swam in Lake Pepin (on the MN/WI border). It was HOT, HOT, HOT !!!
While you may attribute this scorching climate change to Global Warming, let's not forget all the record breaking COLD temps we just had in Minnesota this past winter.
I've said it for a long time, there is something funky going on with our climate, but I don't think it is Global Warming.
.....but I don't think it is Global Warming
And this is based on what?
SPG,
Don't discount global warming. It can and has been objectively measured. While there is no incontrovertible single, undisputed conclusion as to cause, there is clear and irrifutable evidene of a couple of things:
1. The earth's atmospheric temperature is rising.
2. Weather has become more violent, evidence of more energy stored in the atmosphere
3. The carbon dioxide ratio of our atmosphere started jumping when we started burning fossil fuels en masse (industrial revolution) and continues. Many ice core samples taken at both polls prove this.
Coincidence? Probably not.
The ecosystem of our planet is a large and complex thing, and our understanding of it has a long way to go, no doubt. However, there is so much empirical evidence to indicate these changes are at least partially a result of mankind introducing billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, that it is the responsible thing to do to curb emissions at a personal level. The arguments against, IMO, are similar to the arguments folks make about shopping at Wal-Mart or buying Chinese products:"How could MY actions affect the whole country/world?"
.....but I don't think it is Global Warming
And this is based on what?
lol - Did you miss reading this?
While you may attribute this scorching climate change to Global Warming, let's not forget all the record breaking COLD temps we just had in Minnesota this past winter.
Hi Hoodie - What accounts for the brutal conditions most of the country experienced this past winter? And I'm not talking about one or two days of frigid temps . . . I'm talking about record breaking stretches of below zero temps. I have no doubt there is a drastic climate change going on, but to label it as Global Warming seems to contradict our winter weather.
BTW - We had the coldest Spring on record this year too.
Extreme temperatures (hot and cold) are expected impacts of global warming.
Other measurements are the earth's temperature averages, water temps, and polar ice cap melting rates.
Other measurements are the earth's temperature averages, water temps, and polar ice cap melting rates.
Well in Minnesota, they keep telling us that they don't really know what exactly is average anymore.
I go along with SPG - Why? Again, I trust my gut -
As for your pic of the dogs in the water, SPG - I luv it! I just want to jump in right there and then! They are adorable - Ahhhhh.... so cool looking -
Great shot!
BB,
Thank you, I was just going to post the same thing! It's just too silly and simplistic to think that extreme COLD weather is NOT a part of Global Warming......it certainly IS! You have to read up on both sides of the issue, as with everything else, to fully understand what Global Warming encompasses. IMHO, the naysayers don't provide solid evidence that counters the Global Warming theory, only anecdotal evidence.
If you just take one tiny section of the planet to make a determination of Global Warming, your scope is obviously too narrow to make a judgement.
evzone,
'Gut' reactions are just an excuse to not provide WHY. You wouldn't want our scientific community to just say, 'GW is a 'gut' reaction now would you?
Hi Evzone !
I'm glad you liked the pic !!
My dogs are too funny - they are worse than what my children ever were when it came time to getting out of the water. I only went in knee deep . . . just enough to cool off. My husband dove right in, but he trains for triathlons, so the choppy water doesn't bother him. I prefer a nice calm lake.
Anyway, good to see you. I hope you're doing well.
Your husband trains for triathalons, others train for hot days at the beach
Yeah, SPG, I was going to comment on the roll of the wave as you shot it - It's on the "moving" side but that's what makes the shot so cool-looking - again great shot - AGAIN - I love your dogs! I have three cats but I've got to say it, dogs rule! You've got a lot to love there - Enjoy!
Evzone - Believe it or not, that picture was taken with my Droid phone . . . lol
One of the features is [supposedly] the great camera. I always have my Canon Rebel with me, but I never take it too close to the water because my Christmas present last year was my $1,200 lens . . . . and my husband would get a little angry if I was careless with that.
Evzone - you should consider coming out here for a little vacation . . . you would have a blast.
Birfers smelling victory on a hot day

It's not as hot here in New Haven as it's been, but looking at your shot, I'm minutes away from the pool. I do not have a pool at my home sorry to say, but I live miniutes away from one, I belong to the YMCA in Milford. Ct. - a stone's throw from where I'm sitting - which has a beautiful glassed-in pool - and after looking at this shot I'm ready to jump in!
I'm a real water-baby - We also have a beach nearby bu I'm saving that for daytime - It's starting to go twilight and I'm ready for a night swim -
SPG, your invitation sounds VERY inviting! As I may have alluded, I'm an old stick-in-the-mud - however, maybe one of these days I may decide to do just that - do some travelin! Never say never!
Evzone, enjoy your swim !!
We are going up to the Chevy dealer to look for a new truck tonight ;-)
I still can't believe we left our truck in North Dakota, but this will actually benefit us in the long run. The truck we just gave our son is a Silverado 1500 extended cab - 3 door, and now I know I want a crew cab - 4 full doors (for my dogs' sake). The windows in the back of the extended cab are pop out windows, and I want roll down windows so the dogs can stick their heads out (they love doing that in the car).
If anybody has an opinion on the Duramax LB7 Diesel engine with the Allison transmission VS the 5.3 or 6.0 V8 gas engine . . . please post it here. We're still undecided, but our main concern would be the gas milage. And we're also considering the fact that in the near future, we are buying an RV - whether it be a pull behind or a 5th wheel, it will be at least 35 feet, so we have to factor this into which truck would be better for us.
Any opinions?
Sorry Evzone - I had to take a call while I was in the middle of my last post, and I didn't see your most recent post until just now.
If you ever decide you would like to venture out this way . . . you are more than welcomed here. Keep it in mind . . . and don't forget, we do have the Mall of America here too, so we're not limited to being stuck in the woods ;-)
It's hotter than getting rejected in Orly Taitz in Hawaii
SPG, I know nothing about trucks or RVs so you'll have to wait for someone else to answer these qiestions.
However, I do have this question - Have you served in the Air Force? I seem to recall reading something about you on Greta's old forum. I can't seem to recall if I did read that or if I dreamt it. Time to fill me in - again I've been meaning to ask this for some time Now the time has arrived - LOL - Very curious about this - Did I dream this up? LOL
sorry, trying to start a new bubble thread
Hi Evzone !
lol - I answered you in the other thread, but then when you realized you posted it in the wrong thread, you delete it and posted it here - so I had to delete my post too ;-)
And yes, you remember correctly - you are not dreaming !
I actually met my husband while serving in the USAF
You keep saying that I have such a good memory - well kudos to you !!
bump
The Duramax LB7 Diesel is designed to run on up to 20% biodiesel, and there are conversions to let it run on either 100% biodiesel or, if you prefer (and you wouldn't in the winter), straight vegetable oil that you can buy in bulk at Sam's for $2.50/gal.
The feeling of giving OPEC the finger is a pretty nice one.
My2cents
P.S. The City of Ashland, where I live, collects the used cooking oil from every house in town and uses it to fuel their Duramax LB7 Diesel powered trucks. Now, IMO, **THAT'S** an American thing to do!
interesting
Sorry to interrupt you and Hoodie, SPG, on the diesel subject - the oil subject which is important -
I just want to say thanx for setting me straight, I did have it right. I was pretty sure I did but I wanted to really make sure.
Happy to meet you again, Soldier!
will talk more -
---------
Oh, before I forget - Yup, I did it again, SPG! Posted the above in the "Interesting!" thread - Does this sound familiar? I can hear you roaring again. You'll probably go to bed tonight and start laughing and your husband will tell you, "It's not funny, Paulie, that poor girl should be pitied not laughed about."
I have to admit it was funny - and to do it again! Well, almost. Holy Canoli caught it, too.
Man, I need help - see ya later, Paulie -
Before people go crazy wondering what this is all about, briefly put without going into a long story, when a lot of stuff was going on at GW back a few months, I inadvertetly posted something on the wrong thread and I was reprimanded - quite seriously actually, but survived. Paulie found it all hilarious, at my expense - All's well that ends well -
The days of serious reprimands are long gone. Freeeedom
SPG,
Have you ever been purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka?
SPG we've owned our 29 foot Class C and we can't stay home. I got memberships to Coast to Coast and we've just been hitting all the various resorts. Who knew?????
re: Global Warming. What you have to first accept is that the term "Global Warming" is misleading, but the results are not.
What happens is temperatures become hotter than normal and colder than normal. Washington State had coldest May on record. We've also had a milder summer than normal. We have no idea what to expect this winter, but I'm a little anxious.

RWNJ's disbelieve global warming because
1) The oil companies know the intellectual limitations of their contituencies and
2) Intelligent people pointed out the negative effects of Global Warming.
When summer starts in February and standard summer temps are 120 degrees everywhere and the drain on electricity boosts the price of oil to $500/bbl, RWNJ's will say: "I never said Global warming was a fluke. I said there wasn't enough evidence to support it. And there's not. It's a Bilderberg conspiracy to prove us wrong yet again. It's Bilderberg's fault, not our own short sightedness."
