What would his profit be?
Then he made the same exact transaction at 10 am
What would his profit be?
And again at 11 am
What would his profit be?
And once more at noon ?
This could go on all day long . . . . IT DOES NOT CHANGE HIS PROFIT FROM 75% to anything higher so long as he is still paying 25 cents on the dollar. Whether it's one transaction or 4 transactions.
Anybody want to take a stab at this??

It would be a 300 % profit. He spent $25 to make $100. His profit was $75 dollars. He increased his $25 by three times (300%). If he would have spent $25 to get $25, that would be 0% profit, or breaking even. If he would have spent $25 to gain $25 or $50 total, that would be 100% profit. If he spent $25 to earn $50, or $75 total, that would be 200%. But he spent $25 to earn $75, or $100 total....300%.
I know bookkeeping because I help my mother in her business. Here is how it works!
Food Bought --- $ 100
Cost of Food Bought -- ($25)

Profit $75
Percent of Profit = $75 divided by $100 or.75 This is the same thing as 75%

25 dollars is 75 percent of $100. But if you multiply the value of your investment times three, that is a 300 percent return on your investment,. 25 invested...75 earned = 300% profit.

I tried giving them small numbers already and that didn't work . . . . I broke it down into 4 separate transactions for them and they STILL DON'T GET IT.

The $75 or 75 cents is going to be the GROSS PROFIT no matter which way you measure it. The question is, what number do you measure it by to decide your percentage of profit. Find a set of Financial Statements, or a P&L and lookit what number the accountants divide by to measure it.
I can assure you it the divided by number is Sales, or Revenues. Off to the side of each number on the P&L is a % number, so you know that Utilities is like 2%, and Payroll Taxes is 6%, and Automobile is 5% or whatever. The last number is Net Profit, and it is divided by the Sales/Revenue to tell you what your percent of profit is.
Nobody measures by dividing Net Profit by the Cost of Sales or Cost of Good Sold on the P&L.
That might be a supplemental calculation somewhere but in the normal course of trade and business, it isn't what is meant by Percent of Profit.
This is where you need to research it, and then just say you were talking about something different.

I think maybe that not understanding liquidity versus solvency is part of the problem. Plus, not understanding how much money they are making or not making. Which is why my mother doesn't use a CPA anymore except to double check the taxes.
She always said she didn't care what percentage of Revenue that Telephone costs was or what percentage Office expenses were since they were pretty fixed and necessary. It was other information she was after that CPAs did not seem able to comprehend.
Like if she factored a invoice, the percent of interest showed like 5% or something, when it was really 60%, so she started her own way of keeping the books and I helped her where she could really see what was going on. Then she started making money for a change.

Yes. It wasn't necessarily wrong to say what you did, just a half bubble off plum on the terminology from what I know.
"Profit" is just a term that usually means "income minus costs". And "percent of profit" is whatever the "net" is, divided by the income.
Return on investment is usually a Balance Sheet thingy which measures the "net" against the investment.
Plus, this is a real good example of how crummy accounting will just kill you! Foir example, you really didn't make anything if you paid $25 for $100 worth of Food Stamps.
Revenue from Buying Food: $100
Cost of Food Stamps ($25)
Bail Bondsman ($2,500)
Attorney ($10,000)
Loss of Income while in Jail ($30,000)
Cost of Orange Vest to Pick Up Trash on Side of Highway ($125)
etc.

To answer your question, it would be a 75% profit or a 300% rate of return, not a 300% return of your investment. They mean two different things.
