WASHINGTON -- House Republican leaders have signed on to spend up to $3 million to keep defending the Defense of Marriage Act in court, according to a copy of their newly revised legal contract obtained by The Huffington Post.

House Republican leaders took over the legal defense of DOMA in the spring of 2011, when Attorney General Eric Holder announced the Obama administration would no longer defend it on the grounds that they found it unconstitutional. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders hired attorneys at the law firm Bancroft LLC to represent the House in court cases involving the federal ban on gay marriage -- all with taxpayer dollars.

They won't pay America's bills or feed starving children in schools, but the Frighties will "waste" $3 Million dollars for lawyers for the Defense of Marriage Act.

On Jan. 4, Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.), who chairs the House Administration Committee, signed a revised contract with Bancroft LLC that increases the spending cap to $3 million to allow Bancroft attorneys to keep defending DOMA in various court cases. The revised contract also bears the signatures of Bancroft partner Paul Clement and Kerry Kircher, general counsel for the House of Representatives.

"It is further understood and agreed that, effective January 4, 2013, the aforementioned $2,750,000.00 cap may be raised from time to time up to, but not exceeding, $3,000,000.00, up on written notice of the General Counsel to the Contractor specifying that the General Counsel is legally liable," the contract reads.

So when do we put a limit on the debt ceiling...

How about before the money is spent. What a concept! Republicans want to cut the money flow off once they got what they wanted with the money they borrowed, say, like paying for the Bush Era tax cuts.

Yes, continuing the Bush Era tax cuts adds to the deficit. I know Faux and Limbaugh don't share those details with Republicans.

So when do we put a limit on the debt ceiling B-each? When it hits $20 or $30 trillion? You do realize that we pay interest on that debt...you do realize that fact, right...b-each?

Why do Republicans hate America? As has been gone over many times ad nauseum, our government has already spent the money. Now the Republicans want to renege on paying for the money spent. All this does is lower our credit rating which makes borrowing money more expensive for everybody.

Here's something for Congress to maybe think about the next time it decides to have a big, stupid argument about the debt ceiling: These big, stupid arguments, while entertaining, cost a lot of money.

How much money? The 2011 argument about the debt ceiling--the most recent battle--cost the U.S. government about $1.3 billion in extra borrowing costs, according to a new study by the Government Accountability Office, the nonpartisan congressional watchdog.

John Boehner needs to think about the cost and the long-term damage the next time he wants to flex his puny muscles.

WASHINGTON -- Single, 18-year-old female, likes having control over her own body, looking for affordable birth control.

That's Keely Monroe's summary of her life at Fordham University, a Jesuit college in New York. "Finding contraception at Fordham was about as easy as finding a good man from a want ad," Monroe said of her alma mater at a press conference held Thursday in Washington by Catholic Students for Women's Health.

The students spoke in favor of available birth control on campuses in light of a new federal rule requiring most employers to cover contraceptives as part of their health insurance benefits. The mandate excludes churches and other houses of worship, but includes faith-based employers such as Catholic universities, which under the rule must also include reproductive services in their student health coverage....

...students attending Catholic universities have supported the new measure, an indication of the larger fractures in Catholics' attitude toward reproductive services. Surveys show that 98 percent of sexually active Catholic women have used contraception and that more than half of American Catholics say religiously affiliated colleges should be required to include birth control in health coverage.

Looks like the GOP finally blinked on this one! It is a rare thing for them in these polarized times, and probably gains them political capital to boot, or at least mitigates the damage they have done to themselves. Glad to see it

An utterly dysfunctional House

The Wall Street Journal:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who famously lost budget battles to President Bill Clinton amid two government shutdowns, had some advice to House Republicans at loggerheads with another Democratic president: Give in.

The Hill:

Former Bush adviser Karl Rove said he agreed with the Wall Street Journal’s blistering assessment on the failure of House Republican leadership in the payroll-tax debate, and conceded that Republicans have “lost the optics” and should fold on the issue.

“I think the Wall Street Journal editorial hit it right on the nail, the question now is how do Republicans get out of it,” Rove told Fox News on Wednesday.

Roll Call:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) echoed those concerns in an interview on CNN tonight, warning a resolution to the standoff must be found.

“It seems to me that Republican leaders and Harry Reid and the Speaker and Congresswoman [Nancy] Pelosi should sit down together with the administration and figure out a way through this,” the Arizona Republican said. “It is harming the Republican Party. It is harming the view, if it’s possible, any more of the American people about Congress. And we’ve got to get this thing resolved.”

It's a bloodbath. When you've got the single biggest expert on pissy government shutdowns, the top partisan strategist of your party, and even your once-loved, now-not-conservative-enough presidential candidate all admitting not only that the Republicans are on the losing side of the debate, but explicitly telling them to give up already, there's not much there that Congress can console itself with. The only question is, how did the House GOP get to this point?

The short answer is that I don't think even the House leadership knows quite how it happened. One minute Boehner was negotiating a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut and other measures; the next minute the House was in open revolt against that very plan. Well, that's not quite accurate: the hardliners were in open revolt over that plan, but that's not the reason the Republican leadership killed the vote on the issue, earlier this week. They killed the vote because the payroll tax cut extension was going to pass.

So we have a situation in which both parties wanted to pass a tax cut extension, but hostage-taking was so ingrained into the party that they had to hold it hostage just to see what they could get. Glory be, they even got quite a bit, thanks to the unending Democratic desire to give in on things, including the either executive-branch-shattering or completely pointless demand for a 60-day decision on the Keystone pipeline extension, some entitlement cuts, etc. And that's what they got just for extending the tax cut that everybody agreed they wanted for a measly two months.

You would think this might count as a victory. You would think so, but you're not a member of the House Republicans, a group so rabid with political rage at this point that if they were dogs, some poor kid would have to have gone all Old Yeller on them by now. Apparently not even the desire to cut taxes could compete with the dismal thought that President Barack Obama might gain a spot of good from it. The hardliners revolted, the slightly-less-hardliners said screw you, hardliners, but we can't vote against a tax cut, the entire caucus had a multi-hour, closed door brawl, and the whole thing went to bloody hell.

Last we saw him, then, perennial anti-everything crank Eric Cantor was left explaining that the House wanted the tax cut extension so very badly that they were outraged the Senate was sending them an extension for only two months, and so therefore they were just going to nix the whole thing. Yes. Yes, that's the ticket.

We have seen this before, in the debt limit fight. The House Republicans are at this point in such disarray that they literally cannot take yes for an answer. No matter what concessions they might squeeze from ever-pliant Democrats or from the White House, it isn't enough. Brinksmanship has become the only way the House can operate; if they're not threatening to shut something down (or the entire government down, if need be), they don't consider themselves to be negotiating properly.

I suppose it is to be expected. If you elect a bunch of people who believe that the only good government is a shredded, incompetent, barely-functioning one, you are going to end up with people determined to make good on those beliefs. Whether someone keeps getting a tax cut ten days from now is a load of nothing when compared to the previous round of jeopardizing the national debt rating, basic government functions, Social Security checks and dozens of other things. The supposed Super Congress was a joke from the moment of inception, and true to form, there was never a point where it even came close to success; there was literally no concession Democrats could make that would suffice, at least not one that would still leave the government in recognizable shape afterwards.

But forget compromise with Democrats, or the White House: the current fiasco is an entirely self-inflicted wound caused by Republican inability to even negotiate solutions among themselves. They want a tax cut, but insist on voting against it because it is insufficiently ransom-infused; they get the ransom and the tax cut, then block themselves from voting for it because that, too, is not ideologically pure enough. Yes, we can point out that this lower and mid-income tax cut is the only tax cut yet identified by Republicans as needing to be "paid for", after a decade or more of insisting tax cuts for wealthier Americans of course do not need any such balance.

Yes, we can point out that the payroll tax cut is itself a dubious and rather pro-Republican proposition to begin with, since it gives the impression that Social Security taxes are perhaps optional, which would be the first and only necessary step towards killing it off entirely. Point out whatever you like, it doesn't matter. One addled, self-contradicting press conference from John Boehner or Eric Cantor should put the lie to the thought that there is any deeper thought process at work here at all.

There was a payroll tax cut extension on the table. Even the House Republicans were going to vote for it, at least in small enough numbers for it to actually pass, so it had to be blocked by leadership because Obama wanted it. And screw even tax cuts, if Obama wants them too. Screw all of government, for that matter: anytime any bill passes both the House and the Senate, it is demonstration to the House GOP that they failed, and should have asked for even more.

Congress is, at this point, dysfunctional. There seems little room to argue against that. Even party stalwarts are citing this latest fiasco as evidence of House incompetence. Perhaps at the end of it Boehner will get the blame, and be tossed aside; I certainly do not expect the learned lesson to be one that shoves the House in the direction of moderation. Moderation is the same thing as failure, after all, and the best part about controlling a branch of government is that there are always, always, hostages to be ransomed.

so the dims don't want to extend the smoke & mirrors tax cut for a year, and try to blame Republicans? WTF

BTW...how many of you realize...SS is taken out pretax...so not only does it reduce the amount you pay into that account, but increases your taxable income by the same amount.

It’s Official: US Debt-To-GDP Passes 100%…

We’re screwed.

Via Zero Hedge:

With precisely one year left for the world and all of its
inhabitants, at least according to the Mayans, not to mention on the
day of the Winter Solstice, it is only fitting that US debt, net of all
settlements for all already completed bond auctions, is now at precisely $15,182,756,264,288.80. Why is this relevant? Because the latest annualized US GDP, according to the BEA,
was $15,180,900,000.00. Which means that, as of today, total US debt to
GDP is 100.012%. Congratulations America: you are now in the triple
digit “debt to GDP” club!

I. Total debt as of December 20: $15,131,979,264,288,80 (source)

II. Net cash settlement of all completed auctions: $50,777,000,000 (source)

III. Total GDP: $15,180,900,000,000 (source)

A strange thing happened Wednesday morning on Capitol Hill.

As Rep. Stenny Hoyer (D-MD) attempted to call for a vote to extend a payroll tax cut to middle class and working Americans, his Republican colleagues adjourned the House and walked out of the chamber. And if that weren’t odd enough, it got even stranger: As Hoyer railed against them for failing to help working Americans, footage from C-SPAN went silent, then cut away.

Moments later, C-SPAN took to the Internet to explain that it wasn’t their doing, but someone working for House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

The incident occurred mere moments after the House went into session. Hoyer made a motion for a vote on the Senate’s payroll tax cut extension, which would extend the lower rates for another two months, but the Republican presiding over the House did not acknowledge the motion. He instead adjourned the House, then got up and walked out.

“As you walk off the floor, Mr. Speaker, you’re walking away, just as so many Republicans have walked away from taxpayers, the unemployed, and very frankly, as well, from those who will be seeking medical assistance from their doctors, 48 million senior citizens,” Hoyer can be heard saying.

“We regret, Mr. Speaker, that you have walked off the platform without addressing the issue of critical importance to this country, and that is the continuation of the middle class tax cut, the continuation of unemployment benefits for those at risk of losing them, and a continuation of the access to doctors for all those 48 million seniors who rely on them daily for help.”
And that’s when the audio cut out. Seconds later, footage faded to a shot of the capitol from outside.

Moments later, someone at C-SPAN took to Twitter and explained: “C-SPAN has no control over the U.S. House TV cameras – the Speaker of the House does.”

It’s for reasons just like this, one might infer, that Boehner told C-SPAN back in February it would not be allowed control its own cameras.

The non-partisan political network, produced as a courtesy by the nation’s cable operators, had said it wanted to offer a more “journalistic product,” but the speaker denied their request to place and operate more cameras.

This video is from C-SPAN, broadcast Dec. 21, 2011.

Hey conservatives! This "STOCK Act" addresses what is a bi-partisan problem at the top levels of government. Why don't you all read the article Hoodie posted and then do whatever ancillary research you wish . . . and than, instead of waiting for Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck and Malkin to tell you what your opinion will be . . . form one on your own . . . and jump into this thread and share it with us. I really hope that we will all find common ground for once.

BTW, I'm all for either the House or Senate version of the STOCK Act.

BB,

Interesting, you could be right, but there have been many petitions that have been hand delivered to various politicians at their offices that we don't see or hear about, so this could be just another petition delivered that they decided, this time, to be on camera. Who knows, still like the idea and what they said.

JTF - what a ridiculous statement. Obama is not only focused on being a birthday boy. Obama has taken on one of the worst disasters ever to befall America - but he also has to deal constantly with half the country who literally "hate" him and will do anything to take him down.

Believe me - we all know why you hate him - and it is a crying shame that this frightie hate is doing so much to harm the country as a whole.

Instead of renewing economic stimulus programs, the debt ceiling deal enacted large spending cuts over the next decade, a program that many experts say could threaten economic progress.

The U.S. national debt originated with the American Revolution and as of 2004 amounted to more than $7.4 trillion. President Ronald Reagan
made the debt a campaign issue in his successful presidential run
(1980), but the national debt nearly tripled during his presidency. By
the late 1990s, however, a federal budget surplus allowed President Bill
Clinton
to start paying down the debt—the first time this action had been
taken since 1972. In 1998, Clinton presented the first balanced federal
budget (with no annual deficit) since 1969. By 2002, however, the large
tax cuts enacted under President G. W. Bush
, combined with the effects of an economic slowdown and increased
expenditures on national security following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks
on the United States and the U.S. invasion of Iraq, led to new deficits and an increase in the national debt.

PERIOD.....END OF STORY!

Peace prize Grumpy - Obama won the Nobel peace prize. Krugman won for Economics. Big difference. Paul Krugman is also the Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Princeton University.

And Grumpy - Paul Krugman is an op ed columnist for the NY Times - he doesn't run the paper. So, if you have issues with how it is run - you need to take it up with them.

Obama was a Nobel prize winner too, before he even did anything.....The Nobel prize is a joke,as you can see who it has been awarded to....Krugman is and has been socialist douchbag with little if anything to say of any importance......The NYT is near insolvency thanks to the likes of Krugman and the rest of their left wing douchbags.....Journalism at it's lowest level....But then you would fit right in there, wouldn't you, little dark kitten....

Krugman is right. Who is the righties economic advisor, Scrooge McDuck? I love how the right attempts to discredit Krugman, a Nobel Prize winner in economics and one of the smartest minds around, by calling him a socialist...really? Is that all you have? Obama might not have received his tax increases, but he was able to push any vote for this past 2012 and cut defense, which is a GOP sacred cow...he got enough to make it tough for the tea baggers to vote for it...Bachmann already said she would not...This shows that the extreme right wants the US to default so they can blame Obama....Now if default happens then the GOP will get all the blame....Which is why Boehner and McConnell are pushing this plan....

Grumpy - it is not just this administration. This has been ongoing for a long time. Clinton was the last President that really made an effort to cut the deficit - and even give us a chance to pay down our debt or at least get the ratio under control.

Reagan and Daddy Bush were as bad as Jr. Reagan raising the debt by 89% under his Presidency and Daddy Bush 65%. Whereas Clinton kept it to 36% and balanced the budget.

Bush Jr. on the other hand was an absolute disaster. Spending like crazy, cutting revenues, raised the debt 89% - most of which was not required - but his need to create a false sense of security economically so people wouldn't bitch about his nasty little war in Iraq.

Now we are paying the piper - so don't just blame Obama. Much of the Obama spending has been to keep the disastrous economy he inherited from Bush Jr. afloat
